Meet the CrossFit Coaches

THE CROSSFIT STAUNTON TEAM

The CrossFit Staunton team is dedicated to providing the best training experience possible. We are a group of coaches and athletes in constant pursuit of excellence in ourselves, our member athletes and community.
  • Phil Lennon

    Owner and Coach

“I wanted to teach the magic of CrossFit. It saved my life.”

Phil grew up athletic. He played football and baseball and was a thrower in track and field. He was powerful but overweight and unhealthy at 285 pounds. He went on to enlist in the Marine Corps as an infantryman and although not as heavy as his high school days, he was not light at 240 pounds. After Phil left the service, he knew he needed to take control of his health and his weight which started to balloon. He and his wife, Lindsey, dedicated themselves and started hitting daily WODs regularly. They also cleaned up their nutrition with a Zone-Paleo combination diet. As a result of their unrelenting dedication, Phil dropped 95 pounds in 5 months. In conjunction with improving his personal life and health, Phil searched for a calling outside of the Marine Corps. He completed the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities as he finished up his degree at Florida State. All of these facets of his life came together and he realized that he wanted to build something and make a career out of helping people. CrossFit Staunton is the evolution of his life story and to him, it’s a place of learning and self-improvement.

“CrossFit Staunton is just one expression of our mission to do good. We want to do all the right things, for all the right people, for all the right reasons.”

Dan grew up playing many sports including baseball and football, but he most notably made the New York All-State Baseball Team in high school for 1st base and had a batting average of .500 with zero strikeouts. He started CrossFit early on in life and started coaching at the age of 19 while serving in the US Air Force with 56th Security Forces. For Dan, coaching is all about helping people improve their lives. Witnessing the success of the Staunton athletes is the driving force behind his passion for the sport and coaching.

  • Jessie Purcell

    Manager and Coach

“If I can facilitate the process where people step out of their comfort zone and see what they are truly made of using functional fitness, then I feel as though I have opened a vault of unlimited potential in their lives.”

Jessie has been a fitness buff from a young age. She graduated from James Madison University with a B.S. in Kinesiology and has worked in fitness and health ever since. As a Wellness Coordinator and personal trainer at a local retirement community, transitioning to coaching CrossFit came naturally to Jessie. The relationships she has built within the Staunton community has enriched her life. She feels that while it’s her job to encourage and motivate the athletes, she draws just as much motivation and inspiration from them. It is her goal to encourage people to reach their full potential.

  • Rebecca Paxton

    Coach

“I quickly discovered that being a decent CrossFit athlete and getting your Level 1 certificate does not teach you how to coach — being a coach teaches you how to coach. It is an ongoing, always humbling learning process that has been an integral part of my CrossFit training and personal development.”

Rebecca started CrossFit in 2011, shortly after starting graduate school. She came to Charlottesville for a job after graduating and found herself at CrossFit Staunton. What she loves most about coaching is the CrossFit Staunton community. Rebecca is passionate about the sense of family and the relationships within the community, and providing the community members the best possible coaching she can.

Rachel has been coaching in some capacity for years whether for recreational leagues or high school cross country so CrossFit was the next step for her coaching career. She specializes in powerlifting and seeing all the progress the athletes make over time with dedication and hard work.

Kelly discovered CrossFit after gaining 72 pounds when she was pregnant with her oldest son. She tried a ton of different fitness fads, but finally realized working out alone in her garage left something to be desired. After watching the CrossFit Games on TV, she decided to give it a shot. It was love at first lift.

“I LOVE the mental challenge of getting through each work out,” she says. “But the thing I didn’t expect, the thing that sets CrossFit apart, is the people. The amazing coaches and athletes challenge me to become a better person in every aspect of my life!”
